In
February of 2006 I read a magazine article about an increased interest
in artist portraits of children, rather than big box store photo shoots.
The pictures in the article didn't appeal to me, and I decided to see
if I could do any better. A few months before this, I happened to buy
some permenant pens from a clearance shelf, simply because they were
so colorful and cheap. I started experimenting with those and found
that they were amazing, the way the lighter colors would draw over the
darker, and I began making drawings of my children. When I showed these
to other people, they really seemed to like them.
Before long I had my first comission, the painting of Logan.
After that painted 17 more comissioned pictures in 2006. And have gone
on to paint the ones you see on this site, and more that I have yet to
add.
The pens I use are called Permapaque®,
made by Sakura. They are opaque archival quality markers, which are an
amazing tool to achieve the bold, colorful effect I want in my portraits.
Although I have tried many different kinds of pens, these are the only
ones I have found that are truly opaque, with the lighter colors able
to draw over the darker. The animals portraits are painted in acrylic
paint, with Permapaque® pens used to do detailed areas. The people
are done primarily using the Permapaque® pens, with acrylic used only
to cover large areas of shadow. These pens work on both canvas and paper.
